FA Vase Second Round | Lymore Gardens 1-2 Biggleswade United

A dramatic 90th-minute winner from Liam Smyth sent Biggleswade United into the third round of the FA Vase following an extraordinary 2-1 victory over Lymore Gardens at Aveley FC on Friday evening.

In a remarkable cup tie that saw the hosts have three goals disallowed, strike the woodwork twice and dominate large spells, Biggleswade somehow found a way to win.

And it was Smyth, who had earlier spent 13 minutes in the sin bin, who emerged as the hero with a sensational late winner.

Metcalfe Fires Biggleswade Ahead

Biggleswade made a promising start to the contest, with Liam Brooks creating the first opening after just four minutes.

Brooks broke into the penalty area but could only fire his effort over the crossbar.

Lymore Gardens responded shortly afterwards with an ambitious strike from 30 yards that also cleared the bar.

In the tenth minute, Scott Metcalfe had an opportunity to test the goalkeeper after beating his marker, but hesitated and opted to square the ball rather than shoot, with his pass failing to find a teammate.

However, Metcalfe made amends just four minutes later.

Smyth saw his initial effort saved by the Lymore goalkeeper, but Metcalfe reacted quickest to the rebound and fired home to give Biggleswade a 14th-minute lead.

It was the perfect start for the Spartan South Midlands League representatives.

Lymore Gardens Take Control

Despite falling behind, the hosts gradually began to dominate proceedings.

Buchanan produced an excellent run down the left for Biggleswade in the 20th minute, delivering a dangerous cross that nobody could convert.

Brooks then tested the Lymore goalkeeper five minutes later, with the home stopper initially spilling the effort before recovering to gather the ball.

But from that point onwards, Biggleswade found themselves under increasing pressure.

The visitors were guilty of surrendering possession in dangerous areas, allowing Lymore to launch wave after wave of attacks.

In the 28th minute, the hosts came agonisingly close to equalising when their number 33 rattled the post.

Just three minutes later, Lymore had the ball in the net, only for the goal to be disallowed. It was already the second time the hosts had seen an effort ruled out.

The pressure continued.

Another Lymore effort flashed inches wide in the 32nd minute before Biggleswade goalkeeper Carl Davy produced an important save to concede a corner.

The resulting delivery was headed narrowly wide.

Metcalfe eventually earned Biggleswade their first corner of the evening in the 39th minute, offering some relief from the relentless home pressure.

Despite Lymore’s dominance, Biggleswade went into the interval leading 1-0.

More Drama After the Restart

The second half began in extraordinary fashion.

Within a minute of the restart, Lymore Gardens had the ball in the net once again, only for the officials to rule out a THIRD goal.

It was becoming an unbelievable evening for the hosts, who simply could not find a way to make their opportunities count.

Lymore continued to attack, forcing another corner in the 49th minute after a deflected effort.

Five minutes later, the home side struck the woodwork for the second time, this time rattling the crossbar.

Biggleswade were living dangerously, with misplaced passes deep inside their own half continuing to invite pressure.

Smyth Sent to the Sin Bin as Lymore Equalise

The contest took another dramatic turn in the 58th minute.

Liam Smyth believed he had been fouled twice, but when the referee waved away his appeals, the Biggleswade player reacted in frustration.

His protests resulted in a sin-bin dismissal, temporarily reducing the visitors to ten men.

Just two minutes later, Lymore finally found the equaliser their pressure had threatened.

After three disallowed goals and two efforts against the woodwork, the hosts made it 1-1 in the 60th minute.

Lymore continued to dominate, firing another effort over the crossbar in the 62nd minute as Biggleswade struggled to regain control.

Manager Kane responded with a triple substitution in the 65th minute, hoping to change the momentum of the tie.

Metcalfe then tried his luck from distance, but his effort flew wide.

Smyth eventually returned to the action in the 71st minute, having spent 13 minutes off the pitch, restoring Biggleswade to their full complement of players.

Biggleswade Fight Back

With both teams back to eleven men, Biggleswade began to show signs of improvement.

In the 73rd minute, the visitors thought they had regained the lead, only to have a goal of their own disallowed.

It was the fourth disallowed goal of an extraordinary evening.

Metcalfe, who had opened the scoring, was replaced by Ankinbusoye in the 76th minute as Biggleswade searched for a winner.

However, it was Lymore who came closest to scoring next.

With eleven minutes remaining, Davy produced a huge save to keep Biggleswade in the contest.

The goalkeeper may not have known too much about the stop, but it proved to be a crucial intervention.

Biggleswade won a corner in the 82nd minute, yet with the clock ticking towards 90 minutes, a penalty shootout appeared increasingly likely.

Smyth Becomes the Hero

Then came the moment that decided the tie.

In the 90th minute, Smyth struck to put Biggleswade United 2-1 ahead and spark incredible celebrations among the visitors.

Having earlier been sent to the sin bin following his protests to the referee, Smyth completed a remarkable turnaround by scoring the decisive goal.

From frustration to jubilation, the forward had gone from temporarily leaving his side a man short to becoming the hero of their FA Vase adventure.

The final whistle confirmed a dramatic victory and secured Biggleswade’s place in the third round.

A Night to Remember

For Lymore Gardens, the result will be incredibly difficult to accept.

Three disallowed goals, two efforts against the woodwork and numerous opportunities made it a frustrating evening for the hosts, who will undoubtedly feel they deserved more from the contest.

Biggleswade, meanwhile, showed tremendous resilience despite struggling for long periods.

Davy’s important saves kept them alive, Metcalfe’s early goal gave them something to defend, and Smyth’s late intervention ultimately proved decisive.

It may not have been Biggleswade’s most convincing performance, but cup football is about finding a way to win.

And that is exactly what they did.
